QUESTION TYPES

Short YES / NO question:

  • Simple question, answer to which is unambiguous and does not require respondent to think for a long time;
  • Example: Have you been to the cinema for the last three months?

Question with a scale:

  • A question in which respondents are asked to express their opinion using a multiple scale;
  • Example: How much are you satisfied with your bank account? Use a 5-degree scale where 5 indicates  „very satisfied”, 4 - „quite satisfied”, 3 - „neither satisfied nor dissatisfied”, 2 - „quite dissatisfied”, and 1 - „very dissatisfied”;

Closed prompted question:

  • A question during which an interviewer reads a full list of possible answers, and a respondent indicates selected ones;
  • Example: Give names of all the malls in Warsaw which you have been to for the last three months (An interviewer reads all the malls in the list);

Opened precoded question:

  • A question in which a respondent gives a spontaneous answer, and an interviewer marks this answer in a prepared list;
  • Example: Give names of all the malls in Warsaw which you have been to for the last three months;

Opened question:

  • A question in which a respondent gives a spontaneous answer, and an interviewer writes down this answer in details;
  • Example: How do you spend your free time?
